How many pairs of leakproof underwear do you actually need?

The most common question we get on WhatsApp is not about absorbency or sizing. It is: how many do I need? The honest answer is that it depends on how you wash, not on how much you leak. Here is how to work it out.

The rule of three

Leakproof underwear is worn for the day, rinsed, washed, and air dried overnight. That means at any moment one pair is on you, one is in the wash or drying, and one is clean in the drawer. Three is the smallest number that keeps you covered every single day without rushing the laundry.

Two pairs works only if you wash and dry every day without fail. Miss one evening and you are caught short. That is why we set the deal at three: one pair is R599, and three pairs are R1,199 — you pay for two and the third costs one rand.

When five makes more sense

Five pairs is the right number if any of these sound like you:

  • You wash once or twice a week, not every day. Five lets a full working week pass between machine loads.
  • You want a fresh pair at night as well as in the day. Two pairs a day doubles the count.
  • You travel and don't want to hand-wash in a hotel basin.
  • Your household has two women using them — a mother and daughter, for example — and you would rather order once.

Five pairs are R1,799 at Calm Wear (buy 3, get 2 free), which brings the price per pair down from R599 to under R360.

Do you need more than one absorbency?

Some brands sell light, moderate and heavy versions and suggest buying a mix. Ours is one brief, built for everyday leaks — the sneeze, the laugh, the jump — and it doubles as period underwear on moderate days. We tested it ourselves: dry to the touch at 12ml, locked in at 22ml, still sealed at 40ml. For most women that covers the whole day, so you buy one style in one size and rotate it.

If you soak through heavy protection every day, that is a different situation — please talk to your doctor first, and we would rather say that here than disappoint you later.

How long does a set last?

Each pair is built for 100+ washes at 30°C. In a three-pair rotation worn daily, that is well over a year before you would think about replacing anything. In a five-pair rotation it is longer still, because each pair rests more between wears. Rotating is genuinely better for the fabric than wearing one pair hard — the elastic and the core both last longer.

A simple way to decide

  1. Count how many days you would wear a pair in a normal week. For most women that is every day: 7.
  2. Count how many times a week you run the washing machine. Every day: 3 pairs is enough. Twice a week: 5 pairs. Once a week: 7.
  3. If you also want a fresh pair for nights, add two.

Most women land on three to start and add a second pack later once they know it works for them. Nothing wrong with that — sizes stay the same, so the second order is easy.

Get the size right first

Because underwear is a hygiene product we can't exchange sizes once an order has been delivered, so the number of pairs matters less than getting the size right. Measure your waist just below the belly button, use the size guide, and if you are between sizes, size up. Not sure? Message us on WhatsApp with your measurement before you order and we'll confirm it.
