How to buy leakproof underwear for your mother without a conversation

You have noticed. She goes to the bathroom before every outing, and again before you leave the restaurant. She has stopped saying yes to the trampoline. She laughs a little smaller than she used to. And you know, with complete certainty, that if you raise it she will say it is nothing.

You cannot have that conversation. You do not have to. This is how daughters, sisters and friends handle it without a word.

Why a parcel works where a talk doesn't

Everyday leaks are among the most common things women live with and among the least discussed — partly because the products for it have always looked like a diagnosis. A packet of pads on the bathroom shelf announces itself. Leakproof underwear does not: it looks like the good-quality high-waist briefs she already owns. That is the whole trick. Getting her size without asking

1. The label in her drawer. Look at the size she buys — a 36 or 38 at Foschini, a 12 or 14 at Woolworths. Our size guide converts the usual SA and UK sizes to S–XL. If she sits on the line between two, choose the larger.

3. A tape measure, if you can. Around her middle just below the belly button, where a belt sits. The chart is in centimetres and the ranges do not overlap, so one number gives one size.

What arrives

A plain bag with a courier label. No brand name, no product name, no “medical” anything. The courier does not know what is inside and neither does anyone who sees it on the kitchen table. Delivery is free anywhere in South Africa, tracked, usually two to five working days to main centres.

What to say (or not)

Most women write a note. The ones that work are short and make no reference to anything:

• “New underwear. Don't think about it, just try them.”
• “For you. No reason.”

What does not work is any sentence with “I noticed” in it. She will have noticed you noticing, and that is enough.

The one thing to tell her

If you tell her nothing else, tell her this: wash them once before wearing. A new pair carries a light factory finish that slows the top layer for a few seconds, and it clears after two or three washes. Without that one line, a first wear can feel like it is not working. With it, the first wear is the one that changes things.
