What to wear under leggings and gym clothes if you leak a little

Leggings are unforgiving. So are gym tights, a fitted dress, and light-coloured linen in summer. If you have ever chosen an outfit around what a liner might show through it, this article is for you — because the problem was never the leggings.

Why liners and pads show

A disposable liner is a flat pad with a sticky back. Under thin, stretchy fabric it does three things: it sits proud of the gusset so there is a visible outline; it creases and bunches as you move so the outline shifts; and the wrapper-thin plastic backing crinkles. On a matte black legging you might get away with it. On grey marle, in a squat, you will not.

A pad also moves. Sticky backing on stretch fabric is a poor match — it peels at the corners, migrates backwards, and by the end of a class it is rarely where it started.

What leakproof underwear does differently

The absorbent layers are sewn into the brief itself, flat, edge to edge. There is no separate pad to outline, nothing to shift, and no plastic backing to make a sound. From the outside it is a high-waist brief in soft bamboo fabric — the same shape and thickness as the good-quality underwear already in your drawer. Under leggings, under a dress, under gym tights: look for the line, and there isn't one.

The Calm Wear Women's Leakproof Brief is exactly that. Four thin layers inside, a wide flat waistband that does not roll, and a full-coverage cut with no elastic digging in at the leg. It comes in black, sizes S–XL.

The gym question

Jumping, running, skipping and lifting are the classic moments for a small leak, because each one spikes the pressure on the pelvic floor. It is one of the most common reasons women quietly drop a class they loved. Two honest points:

  • The underwear handles the leak. The kind of leak a jump or a sprint causes is small and sudden. We tested our brief ourselves: dry to the touch at 12ml, locked in at 22ml, still sealed at 40ml. That is a full session for most women, and the top layer pulls moisture off the skin so you are not sitting in it.
  • It does not fix the cause. If exercise leaks are new or getting worse, a women's-health physiotherapist can teach you to brace the pelvic floor before impact. It is a few sessions, it works, and it means the underwear becomes a backup rather than a necessity.

What about sweat?

The brief is 92% bamboo viscose, which is soft and cool against the skin. It will get sweaty in a hard class like any underwear does — the absorbent core is not a sweat-wicking miracle and we would not claim it is. What it will not do is leave a damp patch on your leggings, because the barrier layer stops moisture reaching the outside.

Which cut, which colour

High-waist works best under leggings: the wide band sits above the waistband of the tights, so there is no double seam at the hip and nothing to roll down in a squat. Black under black is invisible; black under grey or pastel leggings is still fine because it is the outline that shows, not the colour, and there is no outline. Under a white or cream skirt, choose what you would choose with any black underwear.

The three-second summary

  • Liners show because they are a separate pad; sewn-in layers don't.
  • High-waist, flat waistband, no leg elastic — nothing to see under stretch fabric.
  • Built for the sneeze, the jump and the burpee; see a physio if exercise leaks are new.
